Job Description

Cops And Courts Reporter

The Cape Cod Times, part of Gannett Inc. and the USA TODAY NETWORK, is seeking a digitally savvy journalist to be our next cops and courts reporter covering impactful news for our readers. In addition to Cape Cod, Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket residents, our readership extends throughout New England and beyond. The cops and courts reporter will cover the police beat, public safety and criminal and civil cases related to Cape Cod in state trial courts and federal courts. The position calls for an organized reporter who will be tracking and planning coverage of cases as they proceed through the courts. In this beat, the reporter will be talking to attorneys, police, bar associations, and district attorneys. The ideal candidate will be masterful at turning around a quick story as well as having the creativity of a storyteller. We are looking for a reporter who will break news and balance daily reporting alongside longer-term reporting based on data analysis, public records and interviews. The courts and cops reporter could be asked to cover general assignment stories as well.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in communications, journalism or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • High-level writing, communication and time management skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work well on deadline and collaborate with newsroom staff.
  • Ability to produce content that is engaging, clean, accurate and publication ready.
  • Comfort with using social media to enhance reporting and promote stories.
  • Understanding of reporting ethics and sourcing.
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.

We are looking for a candidate who lives on Cape Cod or nearby in the South Shore or Southcoast.

We are eager to learn more about you and how you fit this role. When you apply, don't limit your upload to a resume; show us what you've done. To do so, put together a single document file that includes the following, in this order:

  1. Your resume one to two pages.
  2. A cover letter that outlines how you would approach the job.
  3. Links to 3-6 online samples of your work. Show us what you've produced or had a hand in that best reflects what you can do in your desired role.

It is important that these items be assembled into a single document and uploaded in PDF format. Completing these steps will ensure that your application receives the highest consideration.
