Who We Are

At Shalom House, we’ve been providing safe, supportive homes and community-based programs for adults living with mental illness for over 50 years. We believe in dignity, empowerment, and inclusion—and we’re proud to serve people across Maine with housing, case management, and peer support.

About the Role

As a Community Residential Support Worker, you’ll work directly with adults experiencing severe and prolonged mental illness in a residential and community setting. Your work will empower individuals to build daily living skills, maintain their housing, access community resources, and develop social and wellness goals. You’ll play a crucial role in helping clients lead stable, fulfilling lives while receiving the support they need.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Teaching and modeling healthy routines and independent living skills

  • Helping clients connect with community resources (appointments, transportation, recreation, etc.)

  • Providing compassionate, practical counseling in moments of stress or crisis

  • Encouraging participation in social activities, wellness planning, and goal setting

  • Monitoring client safety, home cleanliness, and medication supplies

  • Participating in regular team meetings, staff supervision, and safety drills

  • Keeping accurate, timely documentation on client progress and services provided

  • Coordinating with case managers, families, healthcare providers, and other supports

  • Being flexible and adaptable, working at different program sites based on need

  • Helping maintain a clean, safe, and supportive home environment

  • Performing minor home maintenance duties (snow shoveling, lawn care, etc.)

What We’re Looking For
  • High school diploma or equivalent required

  • At least 2–3 years of experience in community-based mental health work preferred

  • MHRT-I certification, or willingness to obtain within 12 months (we’ll help you!)

  • Strong interpersonal skills and a passion for helping others

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a small, close-knit team

  • Patience, maturity, and a non-judgmental, professional demeanor

  • Valid Maine driver’s license with reliable transportation

  • Comfortable with flexible scheduling, including evenings, weekends, and holidays

  • Able to lift up to 35 lbs, climb stairs, and respond to home emergencies as needed

|Pay & Benefits
  • Starting at $23.10/hr

  • $23.70/hr with MHRT-I certification

  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance

  • 401(k) with employer match after 1 year

  • Paid time off (vacation, sick, personal)

  • Life, short- and long-term disability insurance

  • Flexible spending accounts

  • Supportive, team-oriented work environment

  • Opportunities for growth, training, and professional development
